Waiting for the break
I finished writing my sixth novel just after Christmas. Having self-published Counting the Days and Poppy’s Seed. I have decided this time to submit this latest one to agents and publishers. Like many writers I am waiting for that lucky break, that moment when someone decides my book is marketable. It’s a tough business nowadays: so many writers chasing so few opportunities.
My sixth novel ‘I know you, don’t I?’ is slightly different from the others. I am still writing mainly for women and still interested in family dynamics, but this book is more...
As I said in my last blog, 2016 was the year I decided to publish some of my books in proper printed form.
For some years now four of my novels and my short story have ben published on Amazon Kindle. For those of you not aware of the publishing process, this is a free option, a wonderful way of testing the waters, getting your work out there and seeing it is worth reading. The problem, of course, with this, is that...
First of all, I have to thank Facebook for the title of my blog! They very kindly made a little collage of my photos for 2016 and entitled it “Another trip around the sun.” Like many other people I imagine, this made me think back on the year and its high spots and what (if anything) I had achieved..
2016 was the year I decided finally to publish some of my work. Someone recently said to me, “Oh, I thought it WAS already published!” Well, I took the plunge several years ago to publish my work as E books on Amazon Kindle, but I had had several requests...
I’ve just finished writing my fifth novel. This one is called "Poppy's Seed" and is about a couple who have just retired. People who know me will realise that like many of my novels, it’s semi-autobiographical. In fact the heroine in this one is more like me than in any of my other books. Many writers use present and past experiences in their work. I’m not the sort of writer who can put herself into the position of imagining places, situations...
My guest blog is by Suzie Grogan.
Suzie is a professional writer and researcher. With one published title on her CV she has been commissioned to write a further two social history books which will examine the emotional upheaval caused by the First World War and the ways in which we deal with war trauma and how we have chosen to remember that period of our history.
She also offers a proofreading service and can provide copy for web sites and newsletters and provide advice on using social media.
Her website will help you find out a little more about her and introduce you to some...
So, with four novels under my belt, two of them published, I’m starting on the fifth.
It’s always hard starting a new novel. I’m sure every writer has a different approach but in my case it happens like this: first comes the idea, sometimes it’s a dream I had, sometimes just a story that builds gradually in my mind. The characters sort of create themselves, the plot is vague. After that I live with it for a while, getting used to the story, the characters and the setting. Finally I start writing. This is the hard bit. I type the title, type “Chapter One”, then...
